Medicare Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)
Posted by: len3hardy, September 22, 2017 03:00PM
Is a conversion from TIRA to Roth IRA factored into the determination of your Medicare IRMAA?

I know that the conversion increases your AGI and the amount is taxed. I believe, however that Medicare IRMAA is based on your Modified AGI (MAGI), and I thought that conversion amounts were subtracted from AGI when determining MAGI? I did see something from Medicare that said conversions may be included in MAGI so now I am confused.

Thanks for any clarification that can be provided.

There are different MAGIs.

You are confusing the Roth IRA contribution MAGI with the MAGI used for IRMAA.

The Roth contribution MAGI does subtract any Roth conversions from the AGI. This is done so that Roth conversions do not by themselves prevent or phase out Roth IRA contributions.

The MAGI used for IRMAA is Form 1040 line 37 (AGI) + Line 8b (Tax-exempt interest).

"There are different MAGIs," writes Spirit Rider.

According to the Scripture, there were *three* MAGI.
They were Melchior, Balthazar and Caspar, if I remember right.

The IRS MAGI come not to bring you gifts but to take more of your money and return to DC with it.
