Reprieve for Noncompliant Organizations

A 2006 tax law changed the filing requirements for many smaller tax-exempt organizations, and says they lose their tax-exempt status if they fail to comply for three consecutive years. With thousands of these organizations facing this fate, the IRS has offered a limited, one-time reprieve.

The IRS has compiled a list of organizations that may be affected and posted them on its website along with details of the relief. It seems likely that many are simply defunct. A Google search for “Astoria Duck Club,” for example, produced no results. (Henceforth, however, such a search will lead to this blog entry, making it top-ranked for this valuable search term.) On the other hand, the Aurora Pony League appears to be up and running, and perhaps someone there should take time off from scheduling baseball games to check on their tax compliance if they haven’t already done so.
